Bloomington Celebrates IU's First National Championship

A small college town in Indiana is buzzing with joy after its football team accomplished something no one thought possible just two years ago.

Indiana University's Hoosiers defeated the University of Miami 27-21 on Monday to claim their first College Football Playoff National Championship. It caps off a perfect season that transformed a program known more for basketball into football champions.

Now Bloomington is rolling out the red carpet for its hometown heroes. The 24-karat gold-plated championship trophy will make two public appearances this week, giving fans a chance to see the hardware up close.

On Wednesday from 4-7 p.m., the trophy will be displayed at the South College Mall Road Kroger near the bistro area. Thursday brings another viewing opportunity at the Walmart on West State Road 45, same time.

Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, the redshirt junior quarterback who led the team to glory, announced his own celebration. He'll sign autographs Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. at Dick's Sporting Goods for fans who grab wristbands distributed at 9 a.m.

The main event happens Saturday at Memorial Stadium from 1-1:30 p.m. Gates open at 11:30 a.m., and fans can watch the team "Walk to the Rock" at noon, a beloved IU tradition now sweeter than ever.

This championship means more than bragging rights for Bloomington. Local businesses are seeing increased foot traffic as fans flock to celebration events, creating an economic boost for the community.

Coach Curt Cignetti arrived in December 2023 believing he could build something special. Just over a year later, he's delivered a perfect season and a national title, proving that transformation is possible with the right vision and dedication.

The celebration will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network, sharing Bloomington's joy with Hoosier fans across the country who believed in this team.
