BMW Hits 2 Million Electric Vehicles in Global Shift

BMW just celebrated a manufacturing milestone that would have seemed impossible a decade ago: the German luxury carmaker built its two millionth all-electric vehicle.

The landmark car was a Tansanit Blue BMW i5 M60 xDrive sedan, assembled at the company's Dingolfing plant in Bavaria. It's now headed to its new owner in Spain, marking a major moment in BMW's electric journey.

What makes this achievement especially impressive is the speed. BMW only started building electric vehicles at Dingolfing in 2021 with the iX model. In just five years, that single factory has produced over 320,000 electric vehicles, nearly one-sixth of BMW's total electric production.

The plant now builds four all-electric models: the iX SUV, i5 sedan and wagon, and i7 luxury sedan. More than a quarter of all vehicles leaving Dingolfing in 2025 were fully electric, sharing production lines with traditional gas and hybrid models.

BMW isn't alone in this electric transformation. Volkswagen Group crossed four million electric vehicles in 2026, while China's BYD has raced past 13 million new energy vehicles. Even these massive numbers show we're still in the early chapters of the electric vehicle story.

Why This Inspires

Five years ago, electric vehicles were still considered niche products built in specialized factories. Today, BMW proves that mainstream car plants can seamlessly produce electric, hybrid, and traditional vehicles side by side. That flexible manufacturing approach means carmakers can respond to customer demand without betting everything on one technology.

The transition is happening faster than most experts predicted. Premium carmakers like BMW now face fierce competition from Tesla and Chinese manufacturers, pushing innovation and making electric vehicles better and more affordable for everyone.

As more traditional automakers hit similar milestones, the infrastructure, technology, and choices available to buyers keep improving. The electric vehicle revolution isn't coming anymore. It's already here, building momentum with every car that rolls off the line.
