Border Cities Unite at 2026 El Abrazo Bridge Ceremony

Leaders from two nations met in the middle of a bridge Saturday to share an embrace that symbolizes generations of friendship across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The annual El Abrazo Ceremony brought officials from Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico together at the midpoint of the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge. The tradition kicks off the Washington's Birthday Celebration, a festival honoring the deep ties between these sister cities.

Among those attending were U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and mayors from both cities. Four children chosen to represent the 2026 celebration joined the officials, continuing a tradition that passes the message of unity to younger generations.
