Boston Dynamics Opens Robot Training Center in Georgia

The future of safer factory work just got a major upgrade in Georgia.

Boston Dynamics opened its Robotics Metaplant Application Center near Savannah this week, where humanoid robots are learning to handle the demanding work of automotive manufacturing. The facility serves as a permanent training ground where Atlas robots practice real-world tasks alongside their human teachers.

Think of it as a school for robots. At the center, Atlas humanoids are mastering skills like sorting car parts, handling delicate components, and preparing materials for assembly lines. These aren't simple tasks. Car parts have complex surfaces, fragile elements, and awkward weights that often require two hands to manage safely.

The robots learn through multiple methods. Human operators control them remotely to demonstrate proper techniques. They practice in computer simulations. They work with real parts, packaging, and equipment to build reliable skills before entering actual production lines.

Boston Dynamics moved staff from Massachusetts to Georgia and continues hiring across departments. Next year, the facility will expand to 10 times its current size to support broader training programs.

Hyundai Motor Group, Boston Dynamics' parent company, plans to deploy 25,000 Atlas units across its global plants over the next few years. The goal is tackling repetitive motions, heavy lifting, and strenuous work that puts human workers at risk.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about one factory or one company. Boston Dynamics is already talking with customers in manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences about bringing humanoid robots to their facilities.

Companies that already use Boston Dynamics' other robots, like the dog-like Spot, are learning valuable lessons about managing robot fleets. That experience positions them to adopt humanoid helpers more smoothly when the technology reaches their industries.

The facility represents something bigger than automation. It's about reimagining how humans and robots can work together, with machines handling the dangerous, exhausting tasks while people focus on work that requires creativity and judgment.

By 2030, Boston Dynamics plans to expand Atlas capabilities to include component assembly. Each new skill the robots master means fewer workers facing repetitive strain injuries or lifting injuries on factory floors.

The work happening in Georgia today is building the foundation for safer, more productive workplaces across industries tomorrow.
