Boston Dynamics Veterans Launch Robot Entertainment Company

Remember those viral videos of Boston Dynamics robots doing backflips and dancing? The masterminds behind those delightful moments just launched a company to bring that same magic to your next vacation.

Dynamic Creatures, founded by Boston Dynamics veterans Marc Theermann and Farbod Farshidian, is creating robotic characters for theme parks, casinos, cruise ships, and hotels. Their mission is simple: make robots so charming and natural that interacting with them feels like meeting a beloved character come to life.

The company's name honors both Boston Dynamics and Jim Henson's Creature Shop, blending cutting-edge robotics with the art of bringing imaginary creatures to life. Theermann, the former chief strategy officer at Boston Dynamics, noticed something special when those playful robot videos went viral: people loved seeing robots having fun.

"Humans love to see robots dancing and love to see robots in these fun environments," Theermann said. That observation sparked an entirely new business model.

Dynamic Creatures unveiled SnowJay, their AI platform that makes robots move naturally and interact with humans in real time. Using motion capture and reinforcement learning, they teach robots organic behaviors that feel authentic rather than mechanical.

The company has already created prototype characters, including Danielle, a purple poodle that prances and plays. They're also working on a Tyrolean mountain troll similar to a Yeti. But the real excitement comes from partnerships with entertainment companies wanting to transform their famous movie and TV characters into physical, walking, talking robots.

Why This Inspires

This isn't about replacing human performers. It's about creating experiences that were previously impossible. Imagine your favorite animated character from a beloved film actually walking beside you through a theme park, responding to your questions with personality and charm.

The team hired puppeteers to help discover which movements and expressions make people laugh and feel connected. They're studying human reactions carefully, gathering data about what creates genuine joy and wonder. Boston Dynamics officially endorsed this vision, naming Dynamic Creatures their official entertainment and hospitality partner.

The company secured backing from major investors including Eniac Ventures, Kindred Ventures, and strategic support from Marc Raibert, founder of Boston Dynamics himself. They plan managed pilot programs in 2027, with operators initially controlling the robots to gather real-world interaction data.

Farshidian, who helped give Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid its natural walking gait, leads the movement technology. Meanwhile, Theermann focuses on making robots better conversationalists, capable of understanding social cues and responding appropriately.

The vision extends beyond borrowed hardware. While Dynamic Creatures currently uses Boston Dynamics' Spot and Atlas robots, they plan to become a full-stack robotics company, eventually designing their own specialized hardware for entertainment.

This marks robotics entering a gentler frontier where technology exists purely to delight rather than optimize productivity.
