Boxer Orie Walks From Millions to Find Real Happiness

🦸 Hero Alert

Olympic heavyweight Delicious Orie shocked the boxing world by retiring just one fight into a lucrative pro career. Now he's sharing why chasing fulfillment beat chasing money.

A year after signing a major professional boxing contract, 28-year-old Delicious Orie walked away from millions of dollars because he realized something crucial: money wasn't filling the emptiness inside him.

The British heavyweight had everything lined up for stardom. After competing at the Paris Olympics, promoters fought to sign him, with Frank Warren's Queensberry winning the bidding war over rivals and even WWE interest. One professional fight later, Orie announced his retirement.

"I turned pro for the money, I needed the money, only to realise that money gives you a little bit of happiness, it really does, but it gives you zero fulfilment," Orie tells BBC Sport.

The Russia-born athlete moved to the UK as a child and didn't start boxing until age 18. He spent nearly a decade working toward one goal: Olympic gold. When he lost in the round of 16 at Paris, something shifted inside him.

"I gave everything to the sport, I missed everything: happiness, birthdays, weddings, funerals, everything," he says. Not winning that medal left him questioning why he was continuing.

His professional debut against Milos Veletic was supposed to be an easy win. Instead, Orie struggled through it, getting hit and wondering what he was doing in the ring. He saw two paths: continue without passion and risk serious injury or mental health decline, or walk away while he still had control.

"I genuinely feel like that was the road I was going down," he says about the depression he feared. "I feel like I would have been really stupid to know that and still keep going for the money."

Why This Inspires

Orie's decision required tremendous courage. Stepping away from financial security and status to protect his mental health breaks the stereotype that men must push through pain and ignore their emotional needs. He's now a financial advisor and speaks openly about his journey, hoping to help other young people prioritize fulfillment over external validation.

He acknowledges he should have been more open with loved ones about his struggles instead of making the decision alone. "Being strong mentally doesn't necessarily mean completely cutting off your emotions," he explains.

For Orie, life's purpose isn't about money or titles. "The whole point of life is to chase" what truly fulfills you, he says. That realization was worth walking away from millions to discover.
