A kid who grew up sleeping on cardboard boxes in the streets of General Santos City now leads the Philippines' fight against poverty.

Manny Pacquiao, the eight-division world boxing champion, was sworn in as Secretary and Lead Convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission on September 8. The role puts him in charge of coordinating all government programs aimed at lifting millions of Filipinos out of hardship.

Presidential Press Officer Claire Castro explained that Pacquiao's lifetime of helping marginalized communities made him the natural choice. His assistance to struggling families didn't come from political calculation but from genuine concern rooted in his own experience with poverty.

"Perhaps that is the reason why he was appointed to the position," Castro said, noting that Pacquiao's efforts came "from his heart and good intentions."

The National Anti-Poverty Commission coordinates the government's Social Reform Agenda and ensures that disadvantaged communities have a voice in policy decisions. Created in 1997, the commission strengthens poverty reduction programs and brings basic sectors into conversations about their own futures.

Pacquiao served in the Philippine Senate from 2016 to 2022 and ran for president in 2022. While his recent political campaigns didn't succeed, his reputation for personally funding housing projects, scholarships, and medical assistance for poor Filipinos remained unshaken.
