Brazil Power Firm Invests $1M in Solar AI Innovation

Solar energy in Brazil just got a major boost from technology that thinks like a human brain.

ENGIE Brasil announced a $1 million investment (BRL 5 million) in three cutting-edge solar innovation projects selected from 141 proposals in its InovaSolar Challenge. The winners will bring artificial intelligence and computer vision to solar farms across the country, making clean energy more reliable and efficient.

The first project, StringVision, uses computer vision technology to detect failures in solar string boxes in real time. Developed by NEPEN and Instituto Atlântico, the system will work like a vigilant inspector that never blinks, catching problems before they snowball into costly breakdowns. The team has 12 months to complete the system.

Meanwhile, Lactec Research Center is building Smart Tracker, a tool that monitors solar panel trackers and predicts when they might break down. Think of it as a weather forecast for equipment health. The 18-month project could prevent unexpected failures that leave panels sitting idle when the sun is shining brightest.

The third innovation comes from startup The Insight, which is developing SolarCleanAI. This artificial intelligence platform analyzes climate data to determine the perfect time to clean solar panels. Dust and debris can significantly reduce panel efficiency, but cleaning too often wastes water and money. The AI finds the sweet spot, and it will be ready in just six months.

All three projects will be tested at ENGIE's solar complexes in Rio Grande do Norte and Minas Gerais. These real-world testing grounds will prove whether the innovations can handle Brazil's diverse climate conditions, from coastal humidity to dry inland heat.

These innovations could transform solar energy far beyond Brazil's borders. As renewable energy expands globally, the technologies developed through this challenge could help solar farms worldwide operate more efficiently and catch problems faster. ENGIE plans to award additional contracts in 2026, signaling continued commitment to solar innovation. The company received 141 proposals initially and selected 13 projects for its broader research and development portfolio.
