Braathen crossed the finish line in 2:20.65, topping both runs with clinical precision at the World Cup Finals on Tuesday. The victory gave him his third win of the season and added a historic Crystal Globe to the Olympic gold medal he won for Brazil just last month.

The 25-year-old switched from competing for Norway to representing his mother's native Brazil two years ago. That decision has now produced results nobody could have imagined, with Brazil suddenly on the winter sports map in a major way.

"I have so much I want to say, but I'm unable to say anything," an emotional Braathen told reporters after his win. "It's overwhelming."

Switzerland's Loic Meillard finished second, 0.58 seconds behind, while Norway's Atle Lie McGrath took third. Both had also been in contention for the Globe before Braathen's dominant performance shut the door.
