
Brazilian Firm Launches Solar Panels That Float on Water
A Brazilian company just unveiled a floating solar panel system that turns lakes, reservoirs, and ponds into clean energy generators without any land use. The innovative design can handle rough weather while making maintenance easy for crews.

Brazilian company Fortlev Solar just made that vision more practical with Aquafort, a floating solar panel system unveiled at Intersolar South America in São Paulo. The modular platform sits on water surfaces and generates power while leaving the land completely untouched.
The system uses high-density polyethylene floats that support solar panels while creating walkways for maintenance teams. Each float can handle between 100 and 120 kilograms, and the entire structure withstands waves up to one meter high and wind speeds reaching 45 meters per second.
What makes this different from rooftop or ground-mounted solar is the smart use of otherwise unused space. One megawatt of capacity needs about 7,500 square meters of water surface, turning idle reservoirs and ponds into power generators. The floating design also protects panels from corrosion and solar radiation damage.

Installation is straightforward thanks to the modular design. Four different float types connect with plastic fasteners and load diffusers, creating a stable platform that adjusts to different solar panel sizes. Workers can walk right across the array during inspections and repairs, making maintenance safer and faster than many land-based installations.
Fortlev Solar backs the product with a 25-year service life and a 10-year manufacturing warranty. Company president Vladimir Soares says Aquafort represents their strategy to offer solar solutions for projects that can't use traditional mounting systems.
The Ripple Effect
This technology opens solar power to communities with limited land but plenty of water. Farmers with irrigation ponds, cities with reservoirs, and industrial facilities with water treatment basins can now generate their own electricity without sacrificing usable land. In Brazil, where hydroelectric dams already dot the landscape, adding floating solar to existing reservoirs could dramatically increase clean energy production using infrastructure that's already in place.
The timing couldn't be better as countries worldwide search for ways to expand renewable energy without competing for agricultural land or natural habitats.
