Brazilian Runner Breaks World Record, Brings Coach to Tears

Alison dos Santos knew he was about to make history, so he made sure his coach was there to see it.

The Brazilian hurdler convinced Felipe de Siqueira to watch from the stadium in Zurich two weeks ago, breaking his longtime habit of avoiding the stands. "You're going to enjoy what is about to happen," dos Santos told him, confident something special was coming.

He delivered. Dos Santos blazed through the 400m hurdles in 45.80 seconds, shattering Norwegian Karsten Warholm's world record by more than a tenth of a second.

When dos Santos found his coach moments later, Siqueira was already in tears. The two embraced without words, nine years of shared sacrifice and dedication flowing between them.

"It's my face down there, but it's his life," dos Santos said this week, reflecting on the moment. The partnership began when dos Santos moved from his small hometown of São Joaquim da Barra to São Paulo to train seriously.

The record represents the final piece in dos Santos' rise to dominance. He'd won Olympic bronze medals in 2021 and 2024, always finishing behind rivals like Warholm and American Rai Benjamin, and claimed the 2022 World title without fully owning the event.

This season changed everything. Dos Santos won all seven meets heading into this weekend's World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, where he'll face Warholm and Benjamin together for the first time in 2026.
