Brazilian Skier Wins First Winter Olympic Gold for South America

A Brazilian athlete just rewrote what's possible in winter sports, and an entire continent is celebrating.

Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won gold in the men's giant slalom at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, becoming the first athlete from South America to ever win a Winter Games medal. The 25-year-old collapsed onto the snow after his victory run, dancing and crying as Brazilian fans waved flags and chanted his name.

"Nothing is impossible," Pinheiro Braathen told Brazilian television moments after his win. "It doesn't matter where you come from, your clothes or the color of your skin."

The moment felt especially meaningful for Brazil, a country so defined by soccer that many fans watching wore the iconic yellow Brazilian soccer jersey. Brazil brought its largest Winter Olympics delegation ever this year with just 14 athletes across five sports.

Pinheiro Braathen was born in Norway and used to compete for that country before switching to represent his mother's homeland in 2024. He left the Norwegian team after wanting more freedom to be himself and work with his own sponsors.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Pinheiro Braathen would "forever be etched into the history of Brazilian sport." At Casa Brazil, the team's first-ever Winter Olympics hospitality space in Milan, more than 200 fans gathered to watch history unfold.

This victory proves that athletic greatness isn't limited by geography or tradition. Brazil has beaches and sunshine, not ski slopes and snow, yet that didn't stop one determined athlete from reaching the top of the podium.

Former Olympic sprinter Claudinei Quirino was moved to tears watching the win. "Brazil has many problems, but in this moment, with this medal we can forget everything," he said.

The triumph wasn't alone at these Games. Kazakhstan's Mikhail Shaidorov, 21, won his country's first figure skating gold the day before, skating a flawless program that made his entire nation feel like they were at "a big festival of happiness."
