Bride Surprises Mother-in-Law by Wearing Her 1995 Gown

When Jane Lovisa stepped into view at her April 4 wedding in Sarasota, Florida, her mother-in-law Caroline burst into tears. The bride had secretly swapped her purchased gown for Caroline's 1995 wedding dress, stunning all 225 guests with the heartfelt surprise.

"She was completely shocked when she saw me enter and everyone was very emotional and happy that I wore it," Jane, 30, tells PEOPLE. "I felt absolutely beautiful and bridal and it was everything I could have wanted in a dress!"

The surprise took months of secret planning. Last summer, Jane had bought a wedding dress after feeling pressure to check that task off her list. But when both her mother and mother-in-law offered their vintage gowns, something shifted.

Jane fell in love with the cap sleeves and handmade silk detailing on Caroline's dress. She kept the plan hidden from nearly everyone, sharing the secret only with her grandmother and groom Nicholas, 27.

The dress needed work after nearly three decades in storage. Jane brought it to designer Gerta at Amarla Atelier in January to restore the yellowed fabric to ivory white. The designer preserved the original bodice completely while creating a custom chiffon skirt to match.

At her second-to-last fitting, Jane tried on her original purchased dress one more time. It didn't feel right anymore. Gerta suggested adding a detachable overskirt to Caroline's restored gown to create a dramatic bridal train for the ceremony.
