Bride's Eyelash Disaster Saves Others From Same Fate

When Polly Bibby wanted to look like a princess on her wedding day, she never imagined she'd end up in the emergency room fighting to save her vision.

The 26-year-old illustrator from Cambridge decided to try eyelash extensions for the first time before her wedding to fiancé Benjamin May. She even did a patch test first, which showed no reaction, so she went ahead with the $88 treatment in early July.

At first, everything seemed perfect. She loved her dressier look and felt excited about her big day.

But just hours after leaving the salon, her eyes started watering and stinging. She thought it was hay fever at first, but then her eyes began sticking together from yellow discharge.

Emergency room doctors at Hinchingbrooke Hospital confirmed she'd suffered a severe allergic reaction. Her eyes were so swollen and raw that she could barely see.

"The only way I can describe how I looked is the man from 'The Goonies' with the big puffy eyes called Sloth," Bibby told Kennedy News & Media. "I just didn't look like myself."

The worst part came three days later when doctors removed the lashes. "I was screaming and crying," she said. "It felt like acid was being poured onto my face."

Dr. Rebecca Taylor, a board-certified ophthalmologist, explains that even with experienced technicians, eyelash extensions carry risks. Allergic reactions to the glue, infections from poor hygiene, and even permanent eyelash loss can happen.

Instead of hiding her painful experience, Bibby is sharing her story to protect other brides. Her photos and honest account are reaching women who might have made the same last-minute beauty decision.

"I'd hate for anyone else to go through this," she said. Her message is simple: stick with what you know works, especially before major life events.

She's healing slowly now, and while her eyes are still red and scabby, her vision is returning. For her actual wedding day, she's keeping it simple with mascara.

Her courage to warn others is turning a nightmare into a gift for countless brides who will now think twice before trying risky treatments right before their big day.
