Bride's Family Feeds 90 After Wedding Called Off

Quinn Duane's fiancé called off their wedding just days before the ceremony, leaving behind a non-refundable $35,000 bill and enough food for 120 guests. Her mother Kari saw an opportunity where others might have seen only heartbreak.

The family decided to invite Sacramento's unhoused community to enjoy the wedding feast. "When I found out on Monday that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like, of course, this would be something that we would do to give back," Kari said.

Quinn didn't attend the banquet herself but fully supported turning her canceled celebration into something meaningful. "When you have a ton of food, what better way to give it to the hungry, those who need it," she said.

About 90 people showed up to enjoy salmon, tri-tip, appetizers, salad, gnocchi, and cauliflower. The first guest was a woman too old to work who couldn't afford rent.

Rashid Abdullah brought his wife Erika and their five children. "When you're going through a hard time and a struggle for you to get out to do something different and with your family, it was really a blessing," he said.

Erika was moved by the family's generosity during their own difficult moment. "To lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving, really kind," she said.

Quinn reflected that "the most overwhelming thing was how many people were positively impacted." Her takeaway was simple but powerful: doing something positive doesn't need to be complicated.

The family had also paid for a honeymoon in Belize. Quinn and her mom decided not to let that go to waste either and took the trip together, turning another loss into a chance for connection.
