British Columbia Invests $355M to Plant 125M Trees
British Columbia is planting 125 million trees with a $355 million investment from provincial and federal governments, creating one of North America's largest reforestation efforts. The funding will restore wildfire-damaged forests, protect endangered species, and secure the future of sustainable forestry.
Standing among hundreds of thousands of baby saplings, British Columbia's forestry leaders just announced a massive win for the province's forests and climate future.
The provincial and federal governments are investing more than $355 million to plant over 125 million trees across British Columbia. The announcement came from Western Forest Products' nursery in Central Saanich, a facility that has grown 130 million seedlings since 1964.
"This is where the circle of life starts," said Steven Hofer, CEO of Western Forest Products. His company replants up to 7 million seedlings annually along the BC coast, not just replacing harvested trees but also supporting habitat restoration and wildfire recovery.
The funding package divides into three strategic streams. More than $56 million will restore habitats for at-risk species through the BC Aggregation 2 Billion Trees Project. Another $99 million flows into large-scale reforestation through the BC Forest Investment Program. Additional millions target riparian (riverside) ecosystem recovery.
The federal government contributed over $200 million to the effort. By 2027, federal and provincial partners aim to plant 53.8 million trees specifically on public lands damaged by wildfires.

Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar emphasized the dual purpose of the investment. "If we talk about forestry, we also talk about reforestation, as well as long-term sustainability for British Columbia's forest sector," he said.
The Ripple Effect
This investment reaches far beyond simply putting trees in the ground. The 20 million trees planned under the 2 Billion Trees funding stream will focus on native vegetation that supports endangered and at-risk species, rebuilding entire ecosystems.
British Columbia's nursery industry stands ready to deliver. Christina Lavoie, president of the Forestry Nursery Association of BC, confirmed that member nurseries have the resources, expertise, and capacity to achieve these ambitious goals.
The timing matters. Wildfires have devastated millions of acres of BC forests in recent years, and this represents the largest coordinated reforestation response in provincial history.
Forest workers across the province now have job security and purpose-driven work for years to come. The $95 million annual provincial investment through the Forest Investment Program, combined with this new federal partnership, creates stability in an industry that supports thousands of families.
Minister Parmar plans to advocate for continued federal support at this week's Council of Canadian Forest Ministers Conference in Langford. "We will ensure that we get here in British Columbia our fair share, not only to restore confidence in this sector, but to be able to stand up and fight like hell for workers in every corner of this province," he said.
The first saplings from this historic investment will begin their journey from nursery to forest floor within months, starting a decades-long process of renewal.
