Steve Griffin, the organization's chief executive, traveled to Broken Hill in January to personally explain the transition plan. He confirmed that most of the region's greyhounds were already at the end of their racing careers, making them perfect candidates for family life.
The dogs will head to GAP's center in Londonderry, near Sydney, where they'll be prepared for their new roles as companion animals. Some lucky pups may even find homes with families in the United States through the organization's international adoption program.
Local club president Regan Edgecumbe estimates about 50 dogs will need new homes. While he worries about capacity, Griffin expressed confidence that the program can handle the transition smoothly.
