Brussels Creates Giant Flower Wave with 500,000 Dahlias

Imagine watching half a million flowers come together to recreate one of the world's most famous paintings right on the cobblestones of a medieval square.

That's exactly what happened in Brussels this week. Volunteers spent Thursday morning carefully placing 500,000 dahlias by hand across the historic Grand Place, gradually revealing a giant version of Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa.

The installation stretches 70 meters long and 24 meters wide. Workers followed a numbered pattern like a massive paint-by-numbers, with each color assigned a specific number to ensure every petal landed in the right spot.

Japanese Ambassador to Belgium Takeshi Osuga joined the volunteers, placing flowers alongside locals to bring the design to life. The project celebrates 160 years of diplomatic friendship between Belgium and Japan, blending both nations' cultural traditions in a spectacular display.

Japanese artist Hiro Sugiyama and his collective Enlightenment created the design, calling it "Neo-Hokusai." Their modern take on the 19th-century masterpiece transforms the famous crashing wave into a living artwork framed by Brussels' stunning Renaissance and Gothic buildings.

This marks the 24th edition of Brussels' biennial Flower Carpet, a tradition that turns the Grand Place into a temporary garden every two years. But this year's Japanese-inspired design feels especially meaningful as it bridges continents through art and nature.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond its beauty, the flower carpet brings people together in unexpected ways. Crowds gathered around the square throughout the day, watching strangers collaborate to create something magnificent. Visitors snapped photos of sections as they took shape, sharing the progress across social media and bringing joy to people worldwide.

The installation shows how public art can transform shared spaces into moments of wonder. It reminds us that some of the most beautiful things are temporary, making them all the more precious.

The carpet will remain on display through Sunday, August 16. Each evening from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., a sound and light show will illuminate the flowers, giving visitors a chance to see Hokusai's wave come alive in a completely new way.
