Buck Moon Dazzles Skywatchers Across the Globe

The full Buck Moon turned heads skyward on July 29, treating stargazers around the world to a breathtaking celestial show.

Named by Native American tribes for the time when young deer grow their antlers, July's full moon didn't look different than usual but still put on a spectacular display. From the Golden Gate Bridge to the Manhattan skyline, photographers captured the lunar disk in all its glowing glory.

In Tekirdağ, Turkey, photographer Mesut Karaduman framed the moon perfectly behind a ballerina performing on a hillside. The yellow-orange orb created a natural spotlight for the dancer's graceful pose.

Across the Atlantic, Gary Hershorn timed his shot perfectly to catch the Buck Moon glowing at the pinnacle of New York's One World Trade Center. Looking across the Hudson River from New Jersey, he captured the moon crowning Manhattan's tallest building.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Kevin McCarthy noticed something special about the moon's warm tint at 11:15 p.m. "The moon has a definite warm tint likely caused by its low position in the sky, causing the light to pass through thicker layers of the atmosphere," he explained.

San Francisco got two stunning views courtesy of Tayfun Coskun, who photographed the moon rising over the Golden Gate Bridge with birds flitting across its surface. The atmospheric disturbances warped the moon's shape slightly, adding an otherworldly quality to the scene.

In Toronto, beachgoers at Woodbine Beach watched the lunar disk break through dense clouds to brighten the evening sky. Mert Alper captured a couple enjoying the moment as the moon emerged from its cloudy veil.
