Buenos Aires Artist Opens 30th Exhibition at Age 40+

For four decades, Pablo Temes has spent his days designing magazine covers and his nights painting the quiet poetry of city streets. Now his 30th solo exhibition proves you can build two careers simultaneously without sacrificing either.

"Scenarios of a Silent Poetry" opened at Buenos Aires' Recoleta Cultural Centre, showcasing 34 paintings that turn urban isolation into something beautiful. The free month-long exhibition runs through June 7 in Room 13.

Temes captures scenes most of us walk past without noticing: cyclists racing through empty streets, homeless people lit by the glow of LED screens, carousels spinning in the fading light. His paintings blend bright, bold colors with a melancholy mood that art historian Yamila Valeiras describes as revealing "micro-histories of alienation" where we recognize ourselves.

The artist draws inspiration from his childhood memories in Buenos Aires and scenes from Manhattan storefronts, creating what curator Daniel Santoro calls a dialogue between American painter Edward Hopper's lonely diners and the wild colors of early 20th-century Fauvism. Some pieces in the show have never been exhibited before, representing over 15 years of work.

By day, Temes serves as art director for Editorial Perfil, where he's created iconic magazine covers and hand-drawn cartoons for 40 years. A graduate of Argentina's Prilidiano Pueyrredón National School of Design, he's become a key figure in the country's editorial design world while maintaining his fine art practice.

Why This Inspires

Temes proves the old either-or thinking about careers is wrong. He didn't choose between commercial art and fine art, between paying the bills and following his passion. He did both, for 40 years, until he'd mounted 30 exhibitions and influenced a generation of designers.

His paintings also challenge us to see beauty in uncomfortable places: in loneliness, in urban decay, in the strange isolation of crowded cities. That's a gift worth celebrating.

The exhibition invites viewers to slow down and notice the extraordinary moments hiding in ordinary Buenos Aires streets.
