Buffalo Cancer Center Gets $1M to Expand Outreach

A Buffalo community is about to get more access to cancer screening and prevention services, thanks to one generous gift.

Broadview Federal Credit Union donated $1 million to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center to expand its Community Outreach and Engagement Center on Michigan Avenue. The facility, which serves one of Buffalo's most vulnerable neighborhoods, will now have room to reach even more families.

The center has become a health lifeline for the area since opening. It offers free cancer screenings, wellness programs, and health education right where people live and work, removing barriers that often keep communities from getting preventive care.

"It has been a huge success in bringing education, screening, prevention, wellness to this community," said Candace Johnson, Roswell Park's President and CEO. "We really needed to expand to be able to deliver that to this community, which we cherish so much."

The expansion will add a larger main room plus smaller dedicated spaces for events and meetings. That means more people can attend educational programs, more families can access screenings, and more community health events can happen simultaneously.

The Ripple Effect

This investment does more than just add square footage. Early cancer detection saves lives, and communities with limited healthcare access face higher cancer mortality rates.

By bringing prevention and screening directly into the neighborhood, Roswell Park removes transportation barriers, builds trust, and catches cancers earlier when they're most treatable. Every person who gets screened because of this expansion could be someone who catches cancer in time.

The center will also continue serving as a community gathering space where neighbors can learn about everything from nutrition to stress management. Health happens in communities, not just hospitals.
