Buffalo Olympian Brings Gold Medal Home to the Bills

Buffalo Bills players got to hold something few people ever touch: an Olympic gold medal, brought to practice by hometown hero Hayley Scamurra.

The Getzville native visited Bills practice Tuesday, fresh off a dream year that included winning gold with Team USA women's hockey in Milan this February. Players like Damar Hamlin and Dawson Knox gathered around, testing the weight of Olympic glory in their own hands.

"They're in shock and then they hold it and they're like, 'wow, that's heavy' every time," Scamurra said. "Usually it's everyone's first time holding a gold medal and so I get to share that with them."

The visit marked a full circle moment for Scamurra, who grew up cheering for the Bills in the same stadium where she now stood as an Olympic champion. The professional athletes who usually sign autographs found themselves asking her questions about reaching the top of her sport.

But the gold medal wasn't even Scamurra's only 2026 victory. Last month, she won the Walter Cup with the Montreal Victoire, claiming the professional women's hockey league championship.

What makes this story special goes beyond the hardware. Scamurra keeps finding new ways to relive her Olympic dream by sharing it with others.

"I feel like it sinks in at different moments," she explained. "You almost forget about it a little bit and then you get to come here and celebrate it again with everyone, and it kind of reinvigorates you."

The respect flowed both ways at the practice facility. Bills staff welcomed her warmly, telling her she could visit anytime and showing her the team's new facility for the first time.

"Buffalo is such a special place in my heart," Scamurra said. "It's my hometown. I feel the love all the time."

For the girl who once sat in the stands, standing on the field with an Olympic gold medal proved that dreams rooted in Buffalo can grow anywhere.
