Bullied Skier Wins 2 Gold Medals at 2026 Paralympics

Robin Cuche stood on the podium in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, tears streaming down his face as he finally heard the Swiss national anthem play for his first Paralympic gold medal.

The 27-year-old Para alpine skier just won two gold medals at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Paralympics. But his journey to the top wasn't just about athletic excellence.

Cuche was born with hemiplegia, a condition affecting his right leg. As a child in Switzerland, other kids made fun of him because of his disability.

"At the beginning, when the kids at school made fun of me because I was disabled, it wasn't always easy," Cuche said. Skiing became his escape, a place where he could feel free with his family and his brother.

That refuge turned into a passion, and that passion turned into excellence. Cuche won gold in both the men's downhill standing and the Super-G standing events at Milan Cortina, his first major competition victories.

The wins were especially sweet after years of coming close. Cuche had finished second five times at world championships but never quite reached the top step of the podium at a major competition.

"Five medals at the world champs, always silver," he said. "To finally have gold, it's very nice."

This is Cuche's third Paralympics. At the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, his best finish was sixth place, making these back-to-back golds a breakthrough moment.

Cuche comes from skiing royalty. His uncle, Didier Cuche, won an Olympic alpine skiing silver medal in 1998, but Robin is carving out his own legacy.
