Bus Driver Returns $800 Left Behind by Passenger

Onyekachi Ikpendu could have walked away with a life-changing sum of money, but he chose something better. The commercial bus driver in Abia State, Nigeria, returned over 400,000 naira (roughly $800 USD) that a passenger accidentally left in his vehicle last Friday.

Nkechi John, a small business owner, boarded Ikpendu's bus at Uzuakoli heading to Umuahia. She got off at Ubani Market but left her bag behind with all her business cash and personal belongings inside.

The moment she realized what happened, John rushed to the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal. Ikpendu had already secured her bag and was waiting with everything intact.

"I am grateful and content with what I have," Ikpendu told reporters. "No amount of money I see now will move me to take what does not belong to me."

For Ikpendu, the choice was never really a choice at all. He explained that returning the money felt important because he believes honesty brings its own rewards, and he's content earning his living through honest work.

John expressed overwhelming gratitude, not just to Ikpendu but also to the state's infrastructure improvements. She credited the newly constructed terminal for making it possible to trace the vehicle and recover her business funds so quickly.
