BYD Adds Luxury Tech to $13K Electric Car

Advanced self-driving technology just became accessible to millions more people thanks to a groundbreaking move by Chinese automaker BYD.

The company's bestselling Seagull electric car now comes with optional roof-mounted LiDAR sensors for just $13,400. That's the same advanced technology Tesla and other luxury brands charge premium prices for, now available on a car that costs less than most used vehicles.

The Seagull was already a massive hit. Last year, nearly 450,000 people bought one, making it the fifth bestselling electric vehicle in the world.

The 2026 model keeps the incredibly low starting price of $10,300 for the base version with 190 miles of range. Buyers who want the smart driving features can upgrade to versions with "God's Eye B" technology, which includes the LiDAR sensor and advanced driver assistance features like highway and city autopilot.

The tiny hatchback measures about the size of a Kia Picanto, even smaller than the upcoming Chevy Bolt. Despite its compact size, it now packs technology typically reserved for cars costing three or four times as much.

All 2026 models get upgraded interiors with a new 12.8-inch touchscreen and BYD's advanced smart cockpit system. Two battery options provide either 190 or 251 miles of range on a single charge.

The Ripple Effect

This move will likely spark a wave of affordable innovation across the entire auto industry. As Chinese competitors race to match BYD's offering, advanced safety technology that once felt out of reach for average buyers will become standard equipment.

The shift matters beyond China too. BYD plans to bring smart driving features to its affordable international models soon, and the company is already preparing to install its fast-charging stations across Europe this year.
