BYD Battery Lasts 27 Years With 10,000 Charge Cycles

Imagine buying an electric car today and still driving it in 2052, with the original battery still going strong.

Chinese automaker BYD just announced it's developing sodium-ion batteries that can handle 10,000 charge cycles. If you charged your car every single day (and most people don't), that battery would last more than 27 years before needing replacement.

The company isn't stopping there. BYD is simultaneously working on two different battery technologies, betting that the future of electric vehicles needs both affordability and high performance.

The sodium-ion batteries trade some power for extreme durability and lower costs. They avoid expensive materials used in traditional lithium batteries, which means they could help push EV prices below comparable gas cars for the first time.

On the performance side, BYD's solid-state batteries are targeting energy densities of 400 to 500 Wh/kg. That's two to three times higher than many current battery packs, which could give a midsize EV up to 621 miles of range on a single charge while also charging faster and working better in cold weather.

The company expects to start small-batch production of solid-state batteries around 2027, with wider adoption by the end of the decade. The sodium batteries with their 27-year lifespan could arrive even sooner.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about making better car batteries. When a battery outlasts the typical vehicle lifespan by decades, it opens entirely new possibilities.

Those ultra-long-lasting batteries could be removed from cars and given a second life powering homes or storing renewable energy for the grid. A single battery pack could serve in a vehicle for 15 years, then power a house for another 15.

BYD is positioning itself not just as a carmaker but as a battery supplier for multiple industries, from passenger vehicles to commercial transport to energy storage. The company recently built the world's fastest electric supercar, proving its technology works at the highest performance levels.

If these timelines hold and the performance delivers as promised, the math for buying electric becomes simple. Lower purchase prices, virtually no fuel costs, minimal maintenance, and a battery that outlasts the car itself could accelerate the shift away from gas engines faster than anyone expected.
