BYD's 5-Minute EV Charge Matches Gas Station Speed

The wait at charging stations might soon be over for electric vehicle drivers, thanks to a charging breakthrough that takes just five minutes.

Chinese EV maker BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging system in Shenzhen this week, promising recharge times that rival filling up at a gas pump. The new technology can power a car from 10% to 70% battery in five minutes, and all the way to 97% in just nine minutes under ideal conditions.

The system works through BYD's new 1000-volt electrical platform that supports charging speeds up to 1500kW. That's nearly four times more powerful than the fastest public chargers currently operating in Australia.

Cold weather has always been a challenge for EVs, but BYD claims its FLASH Charger can handle extreme conditions too. Even at temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees Celsius, the system can charge from 20% to 97% in about 12 minutes.

The improved battery also stores more energy, with a 5% increase in density over the original Blade battery. BYD says this allows their Denza Z9 GT sedan to travel up to 1,036 kilometers on a single charge, while the larger seven-seat Great Tang SUV can reach 850 kilometers.

BYD has already installed 4,239 high-power FLASH Chargers across China and plans to expand to 20,000 stations by year's end. Australia is part of the expansion, with BYD developing plans to bring ultra-fast charging infrastructure to local dealerships starting with its premium Denza brand.

Safety improvements also came with the upgrade. The new battery passed extreme safety tests including simultaneous fast charging and nail penetration without catching fire or overheating.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough could reshape how millions of people think about electric vehicles. Range anxiety and long charging times have been the top two barriers keeping drivers from making the switch from gas to electric.

With charging times now matching the convenience of traditional fuel stops, EVs become practical for road trips, busy families, and anyone who can't wait hours at a charging station. As infrastructure expands globally, cleaner transportation becomes accessible to more people without sacrificing convenience.

The technology also proves that Chinese manufacturers are leading innovation in the EV space, pushing the entire automotive industry toward faster solutions that benefit everyone.

BYD's first models featuring the new battery and platform will include the Great Tang SUV and Denza Z9 GT, with more vehicles expected to follow as the charging network expands worldwide.
