BYD's $27K Plug-In Hatchback Gets 621-Mile Range

BYD just proved that affordable green transportation doesn't have to mean compromise.

The Chinese electric vehicle maker unveiled the Dolphin G this week, a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback designed specifically for European drivers. At an expected £20,000 ($27,000), it delivers an impressive 621 miles of combined range using BYD's Super Hybrid technology.

That's roughly the distance from London to Edinburgh and back without stopping for fuel or a charge. The car achieves this through a smart system that pairs a 1.5-liter engine with a 194-horsepower electric motor and your choice of two battery sizes.

"We are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and available to many more people across Europe," said Stella Li, BYD's executive vice president. The company developed the Dolphin G from scratch with overseas markets in mind, a first for the brand.

The timing couldn't be better. BYD recently became the best-selling EV brand in the UK, Australia, and several other markets, overtaking Tesla and traditional automakers. Now they're bringing that momentum to the competitive compact car segment.

At just over 13 feet long, the Dolphin G sits alongside favorites like the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris. But unlike those models that only offer standard hybrids, the Dolphin G is a true plug-in hybrid that can drive substantial distances on electric power alone before the engine kicks in.

The Ripple Effect

This launch signals something bigger than one new car model. By bringing advanced electric technology to the affordable compact segment, BYD is tackling one of the biggest barriers to sustainable transportation: cost.

The company will offer two battery options (7.8 kWh and 18 kWh) so buyers can choose the configuration that fits their budget and driving needs. That flexibility means more families can make the switch to cleaner transportation without stretching their finances.

The Dolphin G arrives in European showrooms within weeks, with first deliveries starting by summer's end. It joins the all-electric Dolphin Surf as BYD's entry-level offering, giving budget-conscious buyers genuine choices in sustainable vehicles.

For years, the conversation around electric and hybrid vehicles centered on luxury models with luxury price tags. The Dolphin G flips that script entirely, proving that the future of transportation can be both green and genuinely affordable for everyday drivers across Europe.
