BYD's New EV Charges in 5 Minutes, Drives 500 Miles
A luxury electric car that recharges faster than most people grab coffee is launching in Europe next month. BYD's Denza Z9 GT can add 300 miles of range in just five minutes.
Imagine plugging in your electric car and getting 300 miles of range in the time it takes to run into a gas station for snacks. That's the reality BYD is bringing to Europe this April with the Denza Z9 GT, a luxury electric vehicle that could finally put "range anxiety" to rest.
The sleek shooting brake launches April 8 across Europe, offering drivers nearly 500 miles of total range on a single charge. But the real breakthrough is the charging speed: BYD's new Flash Charging technology can take the battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes.
The luxury EV comes in two versions. The single-motor model delivers 496 horsepower, while the tri-motor beast cranks out an eye-watering 1,140 horsepower and rockets from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds.
BYD powers the magic with its new 122 kWh Blade Battery 2.0, paired with charging stations that deliver up to 1,500 kW of power. That's enough juice to charge from nearly empty to 97% full in just nine minutes under ideal conditions.
Even extreme cold won't slow drivers down much. At negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit, the system still charges from 20% to 97% in about 12 minutes, adding just three minutes to the usual charging time.

The Ripple Effect
BYD has already installed thousands of Flash Charging stations across China and plans to roll them out globally starting this year. Europe gets the first wave, potentially transforming long-distance electric travel across the continent.
The infrastructure buildout matters just as much as the vehicle itself. Fast, reliable charging stations have been the missing piece keeping many drivers from switching to electric vehicles, especially for road trips or people without home charging.
"The Z9GT represents the true spirit of DENZA, where advanced technology, beautiful design and emotional driving come together," said Stella Li, BYD's executive vice president. The company sees this launch as proof that electric vehicles can finally match the convenience of gas-powered cars.
Inside, drivers get what BYD calls an "opera-house entertainment experience" with a custom speaker system and Dolby Atmos surround sound. The cabin stretches over 17 feet long, roughly matching the size of a Porsche Panamera.
Five-minute charging could be the tipping point that makes electric vehicles the obvious choice for everyone.
