BYD's New EVs Charge to 70% in Just 5 Minutes

Charging an electric vehicle is about to get as quick as a coffee break.

BYD, the world's largest EV maker, is launching its Z9GT model with "flash charging" technology that delivers a 70% charge in just five minutes. In 12 minutes, the battery reaches nearly full capacity, even in freezing temperatures as low as -30°C.

The luxury vehicle boasts an 800 km range and arrives in Europe next month, with UK availability following this summer. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but the model positions BYD to compete directly with premium brands like Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

BYD's international chief Stella Li called the Z9GT an important milestone as the company rolls out flash charging globally. The technology addresses one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: the time it takes to recharge compared to filling a gas tank.

The charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly to support these speeds. BYD plans to install hundreds of "flash stations" across Europe this year, adding to the 4,200 sites already operating in China.

The company aims for 20,000 stations worldwide by year's end. The strategy mirrors Tesla's successful Supercharger network, which built brand loyalty while giving vehicles up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes.

The timing couldn't be better for European drivers making the electric switch. EV sales surged to 17.4% of EU sales last year, and battery-powered models outsold petrol cars for the first time this past December.

BYD's European presence is growing fast, with sales more than tripling last year to nearly 190,000 vehicles. The company now holds a 1.7% market share in the EU and 2.4% in the UK as of last month.

The Ripple Effect

This charging breakthrough could transform how people think about electric vehicles. When recharging takes less time than grabbing lunch, the "gas station experience" becomes just as convenient in an electric world.

The technology also works in extreme cold, solving another common EV concern for northern climates. Drivers in Scandinavia, Canada, and other cold regions have long worried about battery performance in winter.

While some experts argue that widespread charging infrastructure matters more than ultrafast speeds, having both gives drivers confidence. The combination of quick charging and growing station networks removes the psychological barrier of range anxiety.

BYD's expansion into the luxury market shows that fast charging isn't just for budget models. Premium buyers who might have hesitated over charging times now have a compelling electric option.
