Byrnes Softball Eyes Second Straight State Championship

When eighth-grade shortstop Garrison Aiken turned a double play to seal her team's 13-2 victory, she slammed the ball into the dirt and sprinted toward her celebrating teammates. The Byrnes Rebels had just punched their ticket to a second consecutive state championship series.

Byrnes demolished rival Boiling Springs in five innings on May 19 to win the Upper State finals. The statement win sets up a showdown on May 25 in Columbia, where they'll face either Summerville or Sumter for the Class 5A-D1 state title.

"We wanted to show that there is a gap between us," said Garrison, daughter of head coach Brandi Aiken. "We wanted to make a statement, and we want to go back-to-back."

The stakes are personal for this team. Last year, Byrnes ended Summerville's stunning 83-game winning streak with a dramatic 9-8 victory in Game 2 of the finals. They prepared all season for a potential rematch, even as both programs lost key players.

Why This Inspires

Byrnes has captured six state championships across three classifications since 1991, but never consecutive titles. What makes this team special isn't just talent. It's chemistry and competitive fire that freshman catcher Wren Gaines says pushes them beyond their limits.

"As a team, we work so well together, and we have great chemistry," Gaines said. "We don't like to lose. We have that competitive spirit that can get us past the ship, and with another ring."
