Caitlin Clark Sets USA Record in FIBA World Cup Debut

Caitlin Clark just proved she belongs on the world stage, and she did it without a single mistake.

The point guard made her FIBA Women's World Cup debut on September 4 in Berlin, Germany, delivering a performance that rewrote the record books. Clark scored a team-high 14 points and dished out 11 assists without turning the ball over once, leading Team USA to a 94-61 win over China in the tournament's opening game.

That assist total broke a USA record. Clark became the first American player in World Cup history to record 10 or more assists in a game without a turnover, joining an elite group of only eight players worldwide who have reached double-digit assists in the tournament since 1994.

"I thought Caitlin was terrific, coming off the bench and changing the tempo of the game," USA head coach Kara Lawson said after the victory. Clark's court vision and passing ability have made her a standout all season, and now she's bringing that magic to international competition.

The 22-year-old is having a breakout season with the Indiana Fever, averaging 22.5 points and 8.4 assists per game. After missing most of last season due to injuries, she's proving why scouts called her a generational playmaker who sees passing windows before they even open.

"Being surrounded by five people who have won gold medals before at the highest level, I try to follow their lead and take every bit of wisdom they try to give me," Clark said. Her willingness to learn while still making an immediate impact speaks volumes about her character and potential.

"Playing around so many talented players, anybody I pass the ball to, it feels like they are never gonna miss a shot," Clark added. That team-first mentality, combined with her scoring ability from anywhere on the court (including her signature 30-foot three-pointers), makes her a complete player who elevates everyone around her.

Team USA is chasing its fifth consecutive World Cup title and has won nine of the last 12 tournaments. With players like Clark stepping up, that dominance shows no signs of slowing down.
