Cal Poly Upsets Top-Ranked UCSB to Reach Baseball Final

The Cal Poly Mustangs pulled off the upset of the tournament, rallying past 23rd-ranked UC Santa Barbara 4-2 to reach the Big West Baseball Championship final and move one step closer to defending their title.

Sophomore Cam Hoiland sparked the victory with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, becoming the offensive engine Cal Poly needed in the biggest game of their season. His four hits included three singles and a booming double that nearly cleared the left-center field wall.

The Mustangs found themselves trailing 2-1 after four innings, having lost all three previous matchups against the Gauchos this season by a combined score of 22-8. But this time, something was different.

Cal Poly chipped away with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. The go-ahead run came in the seventh when Jake Downing's single scored Alejandro Garza, who had reached base on a Santa Barbara error.

Starting pitcher Carson Turnquist delivered when it mattered most. After throwing 99 pitches through five innings, pitching coach Seth Moir asked how he felt. "I was like, I feel like I got better stuff," Turnquist recalled. He then struck out the side on just 14 pitches in the sixth inning.

Closer Nick Bonn sealed the victory with his 14th save of the season, tying the Cal Poly single-season record set twice before. The 12-hit offensive attack marked the 34th time this year the Mustangs reached double-digit hits.

This comeback represents Cal Poly's 21st come-from-behind victory of the season, showing a team that refuses to quit. Head coach Larry Lee, in his 15th year leading the program, emphasized that his team has grown since those April losses. "We're just better than we were when we played them," Lee said simply.

The Mustangs now stand one win away from back-to-back conference tournament titles and a return trip to the NCAA Regionals. For a team that lost three straight to this opponent just weeks ago, Friday's victory proves that growth happens in the moments between failure and opportunity.
