California Jobs First Creates 61,000 New Jobs Statewide

California's targeted approach to job creation is paying off with over 61,000 new positions created across the state.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that the California Jobs First initiative has invested nearly $1.6 billion in regional job creation programs since its launch. The statewide effort takes a localized approach, funding job strategies tailored to each region's strongest industries.

The program gives each region $5 million in seed funding to develop customized employment plans. Then it provides additional catalyst funding to turn those plans into reality.

In Orange County alone, $9 million supported 46 different projects spanning wildfire response training, drone technician programs, and AI innovation hubs. The region focused on its core strengths: science, manufacturing, travel and tourism, and technology.

The announcement took place at Medtronic, one of Orange County's largest medical technology employers. Jeff Ball, president and CEO of the Orange County Business Council, highlighted how the regional funding model allows communities to address their specific workforce needs.

The Ripple Effect

The program's impact extends beyond raw job numbers. By focusing on regional industries, California Jobs First aims to expand access to high-paying careers in areas that previously lacked those opportunities.

The initiative includes tax credits for film and TV production companies, plus incentives for businesses expanding or relocating to California. Each region develops projects that match local talent with local industry needs, creating sustainable employment ecosystems rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.

The customized approach means a coastal community might focus on tourism and hospitality training while an inland area develops manufacturing skills programs. This flexibility helps communities build on existing strengths while adapting to changing economic conditions.

Newsom emphasized the program's commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that high-quality job opportunities reach Californians across different regions and economic backgrounds. The governor confirmed the initiative will remain a priority through the remainder of his term, with ongoing funding supporting new projects already in development.
