California Volunteers Collect 22,000 Pounds of Waterway Trash

Last year, volunteers across Solano County pulled more than 21,827 pounds of trash and 903 pounds of recyclables from local waterways, and this year's organizers are ready to break that record.

On September 19th, California residents can join the 42nd annual Coastal Cleanup Day at Lake Solano and Putah Creek. The three-hour event runs from 9 a.m. to noon, offering a chance to spend a Saturday morning outdoors while protecting the community's natural spaces.

"We have 34 sites around the county, and our site captains are energized," said Robyn Slater, coordinator for Solano County's cleanups. "The more volunteers that come out, the more litter and recyclables we can collect!"

This isn't just about picking up trash. The cleanup helps researchers track pollution patterns that inform real policy changes to reduce marine debris. Each piece of litter collected gets recorded, contributing to a decades-long data set that helps lawmakers develop strategies to keep waterways clean.

Families are encouraged to bring friends and make it a group effort. Volunteers need closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle. Some sites provide gloves and trash pickers, but bringing your own is helpful.

The Ripple Effect

What starts as a Saturday morning cleanup creates waves of change far beyond the shoreline. The data collected by volunteers has already influenced environmental policies across California. When communities see their neighbors caring for local waterways, it inspires more people to think twice before littering and to participate in future cleanups.

The event is coordinated by the Solano Resource Conservation District and funded by local wastewater agencies and the cities and County of Solano. Registration is free and available at cleanupsolano.org.
