These 24-armed ocean predators earned the nickname "seasquatch" because scientists couldn't find them anymore. In 2013, a perfect storm of ocean heatwaves and disease wiped out 99% of California's sunflower sea stars, and the ocean has been suffering ever since.
When the sea stars vanished, purple sea urchin populations exploded by over 10,000%. By 2017, these voracious urchins had destroyed more than 90% of kelp forests along the West Coast, stripping the underwater landscape to bare rock.
The loss was catastrophic. Kelp forests absorb 20 times more carbon dioxide than the same area of land forest, provide nurseries for countless marine species, and protect coastal communities from erosion by absorbing wave energy.
