Calvert-Lewin Scores 8 in 10 After Leeds Free Transfer

Sometimes all a career needs is someone who believes in you again.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin walked away from Everton last summer as a free agent after nine injury-riddled years and just three goals in his final season. At 28, few clubs were calling, and fewer still believed the England striker had anything left to offer.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke saw something different. Despite dozens of strikers being offered to him after Leeds earned promotion, Farke had his eye on only one name.

"I was clear very early that if there is a chance to sign Dominic, I would sign him," Farke told Sky Sports. "For me, he's one of the best English strikers that we have in this league and his quality was never in doubt."

That faith has paid off spectacularly. Calvert-Lewin has scored eight goals in his last 10 games for Leeds, outscoring every striker signed for big money this season including Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko.

Monday night, he'll face Everton for the first time since leaving. His goals have helped Leeds climb five points clear of relegation, and England manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly taking notice.

Leeds defender James Justin, who also left his longtime club last summer after six years at Leicester, understands what the fresh start has meant. "He was ready for a new challenge," Justin said. "We'd been at the same club for a while and wanted something fresh."

Why This Inspires

Farke's approach wasn't complicated. The German manager, himself a former striker who played in lower leagues, simply took time to understand what had gone wrong and reminded Calvert-Lewin of who he was.

"I can't say I've had too many conversations like that with managers," Calvert-Lewin admitted about his first phone call with Farke. The human touch and genuine belief struck a chord with a player who needed someone to see past the injury reports.

Farke has a track record of reviving strikers others had given up on. He helped turn Marcus Thuram from an uncertain winger into a World Cup finalist now valued at £100 million and playing for Inter Milan.

But the Leeds manager deflects credit. "I don't have to explain to Dominic how to score a goal," he said. "Perhaps it helps that he knows he has a manager who knows exactly how he feels and what he needs."

Justin credits Calvert-Lewin's professionalism for the turnaround too. "He takes care of his body, eats the right things and recovers well. He's always looking to improve himself. I feel like that's why the goals are coming."

The transformation from forgotten free agent to potential England recall has taken just six months. If Calvert-Lewin keeps Leeds in the Premier League, he might just be the signing of the season.
