Cambridge Students Win $465K in College Scholarships

Seniors at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School received $464,700 in scholarships at their annual awards ceremony, proving that when a community invests in its students, everyone wins.

The April 29 event distributed 210 individual awards across 110 different scholarships. Each one recognized something unique, from stellar grades to athletic achievements, artistic pursuits to neighborhood roots.

The scholarships came from local individuals, institutions, and community groups who pooled their resources to open doors for graduating seniors. Some awards honored specific teachers who championed education equity, while others supported immigrant students or those entering trade professions.

More than half the total came from two powerhouse programs. The Falcon Pride Scholarships awarded $130,000 to 13 students, giving each recipient $10,000 spread across four years of college. MIT Impact Scholarships added another $60,000 for six students who made positive differences in their communities.

The Falcon Pride program started in 2017 when Cambridge parents noticed income gaps preventing talented students from affording college. They partnered with the Cambridge Community Foundation and rallied more than 75 donors to create sustainable, multi-year support.

This year brought three new Falcon Pride scholarships. Two honor Cambridge teachers Wislande Pierre and Karen Engels for advancing education equity. The third partners with Enroot Education, a local nonprofit supporting immigrant high school students.

Friends of CRLS, a nonprofit started by two parents in 2006, distributed $113,710 across 33 scholarships to 59 students. Recipients included an aspiring journalist and a technical school graduate who received funding for professional equipment.

The Ripple Effect

These scholarships do more than cover tuition. They send a powerful message that Cambridge sees potential in its young people and backs that belief with real money. When 75+ donors contribute to a single scholarship fund, they create a safety net that catches talented students who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

The diversity of awards means nearly every student can find recognition for their unique strengths. Athletes, artists, community volunteers, and future tradespeople all walked across that stage knowing their hometown believes in them.

More than 200 Cambridge students are heading to college or trade school with financial support and community backing.
