Canada to Invest $200B in Renewables, Creating 350K Jobs

Canada is betting big on a cleaner future, and the numbers are stunning enough to make anyone hopeful about what's possible when nations commit to real change.

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association projects that Canada will invest between $14 billion and $20 billion annually through 2035 in wind, solar, and energy storage infrastructure. The plan calls for doubling Canada's renewable capacity within a decade. Right now, Canada has 17 gigawatts of wind power, 2.3 gigawatts of solar, and one gigawatt of storage capacity. By 2035, those numbers could jump to 47 gigawatts of wind, 28 gigawatts of solar, and 17 gigawatts of storage.

"The momentum is building fast," said CanREA president Vittoria Bellissimo. Her organization estimates that up to 350,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs will emerge from this transformation, spanning everything from manufacturing and installation to grid management and maintenance.

Prime Minister Mark Carney recently signed a strategic partnership with China to collaborate on battery, solar, and wind technology, signaling Canada's willingness to work across borders to accelerate progress. The government is also eyeing offshore wind projects in the Maritimes as potentially transformative opportunities, though those aren't even included in the $200 billion estimate.

The timing feels particularly significant given the global debate about energy futures. While some nations question the viability of renewables, experts point to a simple truth: upgrading to modern, renewable energy grids creates more reliable and affordable electricity, not less.

Columbia University professor Steven Cohen recently noted that modernizing electrical grids with renewable energy leads to lower costs and greater reliability. "All these transformations will stimulate, and not impede, economic growth," he wrote, comparing the shift to past technological revolutions in communications and internet access.

Canada's offshore wind potential adds another layer of promise. The Maritimes could become a hub for ocean-based wind generation, tapping into powerful coastal winds while creating specialized jobs in an emerging industry.
