Cancer Charity Upgrades Hospital Waiting Room in Burnley

A cancer detection charity that already donated cutting-edge medical equipment is now making patients more comfortable while they wait.

CARES, which stands for Cancer Assessment Rapid Early Support, just funded a complete upgrade to the endoscopy waiting area at Burnley General Teaching Hospital in East Lancashire. The charity recognized that as more patients come in for early cancer detection, they deserve a welcoming space while waiting for potentially life-changing screenings.

The timing couldn't be better. Over the past five years, CARES has donated three specialized endoscopy machines to the hospital, including one that's the first of its kind in the entire UK. Those machines have already performed more than 1,400 complex procedures, and the endoscopy probes have been used over 150,000 times across the region.

"With all three endoscopy machines now successfully in place and a significant rise in patients undergoing early cancer detection, we recognized the need to support improving the patient experience," said Anthony Fairclough, co-founder of CARES. The charity worked closely with the hospital to understand what patients needed most.

The upgraded waiting area includes comfortable seating and modern facilities designed to help ease anxiety. For many patients, waiting for cancer screening can be one of the most stressful moments of their lives, and a calm environment makes a real difference.

The Ripple Effect

CARES funds its charitable work through an innovative approach: selling discounted designer clothing at retail stores called Labels for Cares. Shoppers get great deals on fashion while supporting cancer detection in their community.

The impact extends beyond just one hospital. As early detection rates improve across East Lancashire, more lives are being saved through catching cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The charity has even funded specialized equipment for pediatric services, ensuring children also benefit from the latest diagnostic technology.

Denise Barrett-Wilson, head of the hospital's charity partner ELHT&Me, noted that the donation strengthens the hospital's growing diagnostic capabilities while making patients feel genuinely cared for. When medical facilities invest in patient comfort alongside clinical excellence, it sends a powerful message about the value of every person who walks through their doors.

The success of CARES shows what happens when a community comes together around a clear mission: detecting and preventing cancer before it becomes life-threatening.
