Cancer Survivor Becomes Nurse Who Calms Kids Like Her

The nurse who calmed a terrified middle schooler before her first chemotherapy had walked the same cancer floor years earlier as a patient herself. That moment changed Hannah Everett's life forever.

Everett was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in middle school, forcing her to put everyday life on pause. Gymnastics, school, even grocery trips became too risky. The fear of survival hung over everything.

When cancer returned before her junior year of high school, that fear grew deeper. But her parents kept her focused on the present instead of the "what ifs."

Now, days before graduating from the University of Kentucky's College of Nursing, Everett is preparing to become the nurse she once needed. She's chosen pediatric oncology, bringing her lived experience to children fighting their own battles.

"I didn't have any friends that had been through anything similar to me at the time," Everett said. Her nurse understood in a way no one else could, and that connection made all the difference.

Everett's journey earned her more than just a diploma. She's receiving the Maurice A. Clay Award, given to one exceptional graduating senior from each academic college at UK.

Her unique perspective lets her bond with patients in ways most nurses can't. When children know their nurse survived the same treatment they're receiving, it builds confidence and comfort during the scariest moments of their lives.

Everett can see both sides now, patient and caregiver, and she's ready to tie them together. She's living proof that the hardest chapters of our lives can become the foundation for helping others.
