Cancer Survivor Zach Janes Skates With Sharks
Cancer survivor Zach Janes received the surprise of a lifetime when the San Jose Sharks invited him to skate alongside his hockey heroes. The heartwarming visit brought the young Illinois native face-to-face with his favorite NHL players after entering remission.
When 22-year-old Zach Janes stepped onto the ice in San Jose, he celebrated far more than a love for hockey. The lifelong player is currently in remission from stage 3 Ewing sarcoma, and his biggest dream recently turned into reality.
The San Jose Sharks hosted Janes and his family for an unforgettable weekend at team practice and a home game. Janes laced up his skates alongside his brothers, Cole and Carson, to run drills with his favorite forward, Michael Misa.
A wonderful chain of kindness made the entire trip possible. Former college player Bill Maday reached out to his childhood friend, Sharks goalie coach Thomas Speer, who connected the family directly with the Sharks Foundation.

The foundation quickly organized travel for Janes and his wife Abby to fly from Illinois to California. Out on the ice, Janes playfully broke down game strategy with Misa, who gifted him a signed hockey stick and game jersey.
Misa noted how deeply Janes moved the roster, calling the experience humbling and uplifting for everyone in the locker room. The young forward scored San Jose's lone goal that weekend and immediately spent time with Janes after the final buzzer.
Why This Inspires
Sports possess a unique power to create joy and bring people together during life's steepest uphill climbs. A simple message between old friends blossomed into an experience that honored a young survivor's strength and resilience.
With his health restored and new memories made on the ice, Janes moves forward with an entire NHL team cheering him on.
