Cancer Survivors' Embryo Gift Creates Modern Family
After cervical cancer took away Tamika Felder's chance to have biological children, a stranger who survived the same disease donated embryos that gave her a son. Now three years later, the two families are raising their biological siblings as cousins in an unbreakable bond.
When Tamika Felder answered the phone in spring 2021, she never expected a stranger to offer her the gift of motherhood.
Ginny Marable, calling from Oregon, had read Felder's story through Cervivor, an organization Felder founded for cervical cancer patients. Ginny had just welcomed twin boys and wanted to donate her remaining frozen embryos to Felder, who lost her ability to carry children after a hysterectomy at age 25.
"My saving grace in my devastating diagnosis was the ability to preserve our fertility," Ginny told PEOPLE. "Tamika was denied the opportunity to do the same."
Felder's cancer diagnosis in 2001 came just as her broadcast journalism career was taking off. The required hysterectomy saved her life but shattered her dreams of becoming a mom.
After going into remission in 2005, Felder channeled her grief into advocacy. She founded Cervivor to help other cervical cancer patients, though sharing her story was painful.
Then came that life-changing phone call. After tears of happiness and deep conversations with her husband Rocky Campbell, Felder accepted the incredible gift.

In November 2022, Felder welcomed her son Chayton. The little boy is a full biological sibling to the Marables' twins, Emmett and Grant, who are now 5 years old.
"I just can't imagine my life without him," says Felder of her now 3-year-old son.
Sunny's Take
The two families haven't just stayed in touch. They've become inseparable, raising the three biological brothers as cousins across state lines.
"For us, it really is... we're family," Felder says. "I call it our version of Modern Family."
Felder's family now includes Campbell's adult daughter Zakiya and little Chayton, who completed what she once thought was impossible. The Marables and Felders visit regularly, celebrating birthdays and holidays together.
What started as an act of extraordinary generosity between strangers has blossomed into something even more precious: a chosen family built on shared struggle, compassion, and love.
"It definitely is a role model in how you can create your own family unit," Felder says.
