Cape Town Beats 40°C Heat With Beach Day Spirit

Cape Town transformed a dangerous heatwave into a celebration of resilience this week, with residents flocking to the coast as temperatures hit 43°C in some areas.

On Wednesday, the city entered its third day of extreme heat, with thermometers climbing into the high 30s across most neighborhoods. Vredenburg on the West Coast and Newlands both recorded a scorching 43°C, making it one of the hottest days on record.

But Capetonians had other plans. Instead of staying shuttered indoors, families, workers, and visitors packed the beaches and public pools from Camps Bay to Sea Point.

A chef grabbed a quick dip in the Camps Bay tidal pool during his work break, still in his whites. City employee Peter Jantjies treated himself to an ice cream along the Sea Point Promenade. A group of friends from the Cape Flats claimed their spot at the tidal pools, laughing and splashing away the heat.

The beaches became the great equalizer. Clifton Fourth Beach was shoulder to shoulder with sunbathers by afternoon.
