Cape Town's Shark Spotters Keep Beaches Safe from Above

Every morning before sunrise, Dennis Chikodze pedals his bicycle up a mountain to save lives.

From a small wooden hut high above Cape Town's False Bay, Chikodze watches over Muizenberg Beach as one of the city's trained shark spotters. His polarized binoculars scan the water where hundreds of surfers dot the waves, trusting their safety to his vigilance.

Chikodze works for Shark Spotters, a nonprofit organization that protects beachgoers while creating jobs for people from surrounding communities like Masiphumelele, where he lives. The program trains spotters for months in marine identification, spotting techniques, and how wind, swell, and clouds can hide or reveal a shark.

The job requires intense focus. Spotters work five-hour shifts because, as Chikodze explains, you can only stare at the ocean so long before your mind wanders.

From his perch, he must learn every rock beneath the waterline, every dark patch of kelp, and every shift in water color. He needs to know what belongs and what doesn't in his section of the bay.

When he spots danger, the response is immediate. He radios the beach spotter below, a siren sounds, and flags go up to warn swimmers. White means a shark is nearby and everyone must exit the water immediately.

Over the years, Chikodze has spotted hundreds of sharks, including great whites, along with whales, dolphins, seals, and massive schools of yellowtail. Recently, great white sightings have decreased because orcas have been hunting them in the bay, but spotters remain alert for other dangerous species.

The Ripple Effect

The program does more than prevent shark attacks. It provides stable employment and professional training to people from marginalized communities who might otherwise struggle to find work.

Shark Spotters creates a path toward something more stable in a country not always generous with second chances. The organization proves that conservation and community development can work hand in hand.

Chikodze has become a symbol for all the spotters working on the mountain, a reminder that protecting people can also mean lifting them up. His daily climb represents commitment not just to safety, but to the belief that everyone deserves meaningful work and the chance to contribute something vital.
