Cardiff Restaurant Raises £2,000 for Hospice Care Charity

When Ram Sapkota opened Base Camp Indian Kitchen in one of Cardiff's most challenging restaurant locations, he wanted to do more than serve great food. He wanted to give back to the Welsh community that helped him build his dream.

On May 14, his restaurant hosted A Culinary Journey from the Himalayas to the Coast, a fundraising dinner that raised over £2,000 for Marie Curie. The hospice care charity supports families facing terminal illness across the UK.

Guests at 29 Park Place enjoyed authentic Nepalese and Indian dishes while learning the stories behind each region's cuisine. Sapkota, who was born in Nepal and moved to the UK to pursue hospitality, designed the evening to share the warmth and culture that shaped his journey.

"Seeing our community come together to support Marie Curie through food, generosity, and kindness was incredibly special," Sapkota said. He credits local support for helping Base Camp thrive despite the tough hospitality climate.

The restaurant has brought new life to its Park Place location through what Sapkota calls passion, hard work, and community backing. Since opening, Base Camp has won multiple awards, including Best New Restaurant in Wales 2026 from the Oceanic Awards and the HSBC Small Business Growth Award.

The Ripple Effect

The fundraiser shows how immigrant entrepreneurs are strengthening the social fabric of Welsh communities. By combining excellent food with charitable action, Base Camp demonstrates that successful businesses can be powerful forces for good.

Sapkota says encouragement from local media and residents inspires independent businesses like his to keep pushing forward. That support matters especially now, when hospitality venues face rising costs and economic pressure.

The evening succeeded thanks to guests, supporters, and team members who believed in the cause. Base Camp continues building its reputation for blending traditional recipes with modern presentation and genuine community care.
