Cardinal Dolan Celebrates 50 Years as a Priest in NYC

After half a century of serving his community, Cardinal Timothy Dolan stood before a packed St. Patrick's Cathedral with a simple message: none of it would have been possible without the people around him.

The 76-year-old celebrated his golden jubilee as a priest on Thursday, marking exactly 50 years since his ordination in St. Louis back in 1976. Surrounded by clergy from various denominations and community leaders, Dolan thanked the New York faithful who became his family over 17 years leading the archdiocese.

"Without Jesus, I could have done nothing. Without you, none of the meager accomplishments you so graciously pointed out could have ever happened," Dolan told the crowd. His humility shone through as he downplayed his own achievements while lifting up those who supported him.

The timing made the celebration even more meaningful. The Mass fell on the Feast of the Ascension, a major Christian festival that honors Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven 40 days after Easter.

What makes Dolan's story so touching isn't just the milestone itself. It's his unwavering identity as a servant first.

Archbishop Ronald Hicks, who succeeded Dolan in leading the archdiocese last December, shared a perfect example during his homily. A longtime archdiocese board member recently decided to become Catholic and asked Dolan if he knew a priest who could help. Dolan's response captured everything: "Well, you know, you're in luck. I am a priest. And I am happy to help."

Despite decades of leadership, including participating in the conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV just weeks ago, Dolan never forgot his calling. He didn't direct people to assistants or make excuses about being too busy.

Hicks put it beautifully: "Those words reflect who and what Cardinal Dolan is to his core. He is a priest who is happy to help."

Dolan's journey took him from a small parish in Richmond Heights, Missouri, through doctoral studies in American Church History, all the way to leading one of the most prominent Catholic communities in the world. But in his closing remarks, he brought it back to the basics, thanking his parents who married in Missouri in 1949, his brother Pat, and everyone who filled the cathedral.

"To be close to you here in New York is a gift I will treasure forever," he said, comparing the moment to Christmas morning surrounded by presents.
