Cardinal Mooney Wins First Baseball Regional Title Ever
After 24 games and three tough losses, Cardinal Mooney's baseball team made history by beating Canton Central Catholic 5-4 to claim their first regional championship. The Cardinals punched back when it mattered most, rallying in the fourth inning to secure the program's biggest win.
The Cardinal Mooney baseball team had never gone this far, and on Thursday, they made sure the wait was worth it.
The Cardinals defeated Canton Central Catholic 5-4 to win their first Division IV regional championship in program history. Head coach Ed Reese couldn't hide his pride after the game at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton.
"This is the farthest a Cardinal Mooney baseball team has gone, so we made a little history today," Reese said. "Very proud to be a part of the team that did that."
The game was a rematch of one of Mooney's only three losses this season. But this time, the Cardinals' 24-3 record told a different story.
Ford Stacey gave Mooney an early lead with an RBI single in the second inning. Canton Central Catholic responded in the fourth, loading the bases and taking a 2-1 lead on a clutch single by Joe Meyer.
The Crusaders' advantage lasted just half an inning. Vince Gentile launched a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth, and the Cardinals exploded for four runs on three triples in one inning.

"Always gotta stay up in the dugout, keep each other up and have each other's backs," Stacey said about the team's resilience.
Canton Central Catholic fought back again in the fifth, cutting the lead to 5-4 and loading the bases with one out. Senior Jacob Gugliotta held steady, getting a flyout and groundout to end the threat.
Andrew Bushey closed out the final two innings for the save, sending Cardinal Mooney to the state semifinals.
Why This Inspires
What makes this victory special isn't just the historic milestone. It's watching a team face adversity three times during the season, learn from each loss, and refuse to back down when given a rematch.
The Cardinals showed that setbacks don't define you. Your response does. When Canton Central Catholic took the lead, Mooney answered immediately with four runs.
Now the Cardinals get a week to rest and prepare before facing Sandusky Perkins on June 13 at 7 17 Credit Union Park in Akron. Win or lose, they've already made school history and proven that persistence pays off.
"I'm very proud of this group," Coach Reese said, and an entire community shares that feeling.
