Cardinals Rookie JJ Wetherholt Lives His 5th Grade Dream

Sometimes the best dreams are the ones we declare out loud when we're young enough to believe anything is possible.

Cardinals rookie JJ Wetherholt stood in the batter's box Thursday for his first major league game, nearly two decades after declaring his future on a small chalkboard in fifth grade. The sign he held up in that old classroom photo read simply: "MLB player."

His teacher, Katelyn Ingoldsby, kept that picture from Mars Area School District in Pennsylvania all these years. When Wetherholt finally made his debut this week, she posted it to social media, beating her former student to sharing the throwback moment.

"I knew about the picture for a while. My mom always kept that," Wetherholt said with a smile. He called seeing it circulate online a "full circle moment."

The photo shows a grinning, bespectacled kid with light brown bangs covering his forehead. That young boy didn't just dream big, he backed it up with years of dedication and hard work.

Wetherholt made his childhood prediction look prophetic in his opening series. He homered onto the Busch Stadium berm in just his second career at-bat. Two days later, he delivered a walk-off hit through the infield in the 10th inning.

Ingoldsby remembers her former student as "always well-spoken, polite and respectful." She told MLB.com that watching his dedication develop into this level of success has been incredibly rewarding for her and her family.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol joked that he had a similar photo from his youth, though it didn't work out quite the same way. He praised Wetherholt's confidence at such a young age to know what he wanted and then do whatever it took to achieve it.
