Caretaker Helps Olympic Gold Medalist, 90, Rebuild Life
When professional caretaker Anatalie Dean spotted an elderly man struggling in the Florida heat, she pulled over to help. That simple act of kindness led to a beautiful friendship with Bob McVey, a 90-year-old Olympic gold medalist who'd fallen on hard times.
When Anatalie Dean saw a frail man walking alone in Florida's brutal heat last April, she couldn't drive past. She stopped her car and asked if he was okay.
The man was Bob McVey, 90, who politely declined her help at first. "I don't have any money," he told her.
Dean, who runs Nurturing Nest Senior Care Services, insisted money didn't matter. "I didn't see him as my potential client," she tells PEOPLE. "I saw him as, 'Oh my God, this man is gonna fall.'"
They exchanged numbers, and when Dean visited his condo in May, she discovered he was living without a working stove or basic safety features. He'd been eating sandwiches from a gas station for meals.
Through a Facebook message to his stepdaughter, Dean learned something remarkable. McVey was part of the 1960 men's Olympic ice hockey team that won gold.

She also learned why he was struggling. Years ago, a woman had scammed him out of his savings, never repaying loans he'd given her. To keep his home after his wife died, McVey had sold his Olympic gold medal and hockey jersey.
Despite being burned before, McVey trusted Dean. "I just felt it," he tells PEOPLE.
Dean started visiting weekly to help with laundry, mail, and meals. This January, she began sending one of her employees to help him twice a week, completely free of charge.
"He doesn't give me a dime, but I make sure that he gets that same service that my other clients get that do pay," she says.
Sunny's Take
Dean sees McVey as family now, not a client. Their friendship shows what happens when someone chooses compassion over convenience.
McVey, who once stood on an Olympic podium, now has something even more valuable than a medal. He has someone who cares.
"I'm so grateful," McVey says of Dean's companionship. Dean describes him as "humble" and "loving," proving that heroes recognize heroes.
